Full Time Case Worker at Sir Sandford Fleming House

At Shelter Nova Scotia we provide places to stay and services to promote stability for marginalized individuals. You will contribute to a community without judgement with spaces and places for people to belong.
 
About the Facility
 
Sir Sandford Fleming House is a community residential facility for residents who identify as male or are gender diverse. We have room for 20 people every night.
 
Requirements
 
·      Successful candidate must have post-secondary experience
·      Government of Canada Personnel Screening and Child Abuse Registry Check will be required
·      Must have Standard First Aid/CPR Level “C” or be willing to acquire within the first 6 months of employment.
 
Hours of Work
 
72 to 96 hours per biweekly pay period on a scheduled rotation of 12 hour shifts including days, nights and weekends. Average of 84 hours biweekly. This is an awake position, staff are required to stay awake, alert, and vigilant at all times while on duty.
 
Salary
           $22.94 per hour

Requirements

·      Strong knowledge of the policies, procedures, structure, mission, and mandate of Shelter Nova Scotia
·      Able to adhere to a strict policy of confidentiality, code of conduct, policies and procedures
·      Ability to remain awake, alert, and vigilant at all times while on duty
·      Excellent verbal and written communication skills
·      Excellent attention to details and organizational skills
·      Proficiency in Microsoft Applications, including: Internet Explorer, Word, Excel, Outlook
·      Child Abuse Registry check and/or Government of Canada Personnel Screening form may be required depending on the facility where you will be working. These forms are completed at the time of hire. The employment offer is contingent on a clear check.
·      Interviewing, counseling, and intervention techniques
·      Knowledge of community programs and services serving individuals experiencing homelessness or at risk of homelessness – replaced in the responsibilities section
·      Knowledge of the structure and organization of the Correctional Service of Canada and the applicable legislation (Criminal Code of Canada, Corrections and Conditional Release Act (CCRA), Corrections and Conditional Release Regulations (CCRR), and the Parole Board of Canada (PBC).
·      Ability to understand cultural differences
·      Ability to understand the dynamics of resident’s behavior and assess their needs and risks
·      Ability to accurately and professionally document and maintain activity client interaction notes
·      Assist residents, through ongoing support, in areas such as crisis management, personal or family problems, education, literacy, employment, budget, life skills, recreation, spiritual and cultural activities
·      Assist residents to secure housing as required
·      Assist residents to secure services appropriate to their needs or for public safety requirements such as, substance abuse services, income support, employment services, medical (including mental health) and dental services
·      Perform First Aid and or CPR as required
·      Participate in on call rotation as required
 
 
Responsibilities

·      Maintain professional, ethical boundaries at all times
·      Maintain positive working relations with government and community agencies
·      Represent Shelter Nova Scotia in the community in an appropriate and responsible manner
·      Assist with MSI and Pharmacare applications upon intake
·      Seek medication funding approval from CSC prior to ordering medications
·       Complete intakes as necessary
·       Complete and submit Initial Resident Action Plans and Monthly Progress Updates according to Statement of Work (SoW) and Shelter Nova Scotia policy for those residents assigned to you
·       Counsel residents, form effective relationships, and gain trust
·       Understand the use of authority in supervision and to intervene effectively in crisis situations
·       Ability to assist residents in identifying and solving the day-to-day problems involved in their successful reintegration into the community
·       Responsible to foster an atmosphere that is conducive to the rehabilitation and support process required by residents within the facility
·       Meet with the resident on an ongoing basis to ensure they are adhering to their Correctional Plan and expectations surrounding reintegration
·       Liaise with the Parole Officer as needed to remain informed regarding the progress of residents assigned to you and to monitor their risk
·       Complete termination reports within the designated timeframe when residents depart from the facilities
·       Assist with training of new employees
·       Attend in-house supervision meetings with resident and parole officer, as required
·       Access and review daily on shift Offender Management System (OMS)
·       Complete file preparation when required which may include printing mandatory documents from the Offender Management System (OMS)
·       Breakdown files upon resident departure
·       Complete selection reviews for future residency
·       Actively participate in supervision as necessary
·       Manage crisis situations as they arise in the facility
·       Develop, co-ordinate and/or participate in resident in-house programming, as required
·      Adhere to Health, Fire, and other standards, as required by applicable legislations
·      Maintain the rights and security of the residents, employees, and community
·      Not disclose information contained within documentation with any resident or unauthorized individual
·      Not establish solitary confidentiality with the residents
·      Maintain the daily operations of the facility
·      Receive and direct the proper storage of deliveries
·      Ensure that the facility and grounds are maintained at an acceptable level of cleanliness and report required repair as recognized. Should a resident fail to complete an assigned chore it is the responsibility of the staff on duty to complete the chore or make arrangements with that resident to have it completed
·      Daily cleaning and minor maintaining of facility, bedding setup, laundry, garbage removal and recycling
·      Activate and de-activate the alarm as required
·      Conduct appropriate House Checks, and confirm count as per Shelter Nova Scotia policy
·      Participate in safety calls procedures as instructed by Shelter Nova Scotia policy
·      Maintain an accurate filing system
·      Complete detailed shift briefings (to include updates on all residents and house activities) as required by Shelter Nova Scotia policies
·      Submit information sheets and incident reports as required
·      Assist with meal preparation, as required
·      Provide access to medication as per policies of Shelter Nova Scotia
·      Maintain required documentation on individual residents
·      Participate in room searches and inspections when required
·      Secure, in a timely manner, the personal effects of residents in the event a resident is suspended, being asked to leave or is not returning
·      Attend all team meetings
·      Contact and follow direction of Shelter Nova Scotia on-call personnel as required
·      Follow direction and perform other duties as required or deemed necessary by the House Manager or Director of Community Corrections
·      Maintain an active General/Running Log
·      Participate in On Call rotation as required
·      Monitor clients as outlined by the rules and regulations of Shelter Nova Scotia, Correctional Services Canada (CSC), the National Parole Board (NPB) and reporting infractions to the Nation Monitoring Center when required.
·      Follow Statement of Work
·      Supervise parolees and support the reporting and program requirements for each offender
·      Follow the direction of the on-call staff to effect and maintain proper discipline of residents
·      Establish and/or maintain Chain-of-Custody of evidence
·      Document activities of residents by virtue of a Running Log to ensure that all arrivals/departures, and contacts, are recorded as per Shelter Nova Scotia procedures and policies

Hours of Work
72 to 96 hours biweekly working 12 hour shifts on a scheduled rotation including days, nights and weekends. Salary will be averaged to 84 hours biweekly
